Woodgrain Wanderlust

Using wood harvested from the Absaroka mountains of Paradise Valley, Herb Johnson crafts one-of-a-kind furniture and wall art. From tree to table, Herb fells, mills and works each slab, bringing you your very own authentic slice of Montana. All from the very same mountain property his great-grandparents homesteaded in 1916. Herb has proudly pioneered his own woodworking aesthetic—a combination of meticulous gel staining with the natural wood grain and the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. The end result is vibrant, unique furniture and wall art that pays homage to the rich natural colors of Yellowstone National Park, Montana's rivers, and its national forests. Each piece of wood maintains its natural character and grain, telling the story of the tree itself. He also specializes in seamless waterfall joinery. Together, these techniques create furniture and wall art that is both rustic in its natural appearance and sleek and modern in its joinery.
