Giovanni DeFendis Pottery

I grew up in California’s central valley where my grandparents were table grape farmers. I have been surrounded by nature and agriculture my entire life. I earned a BFA from BYU-Idaho in 2014 in ceramics. Working in clay was natural from the beginning. During the summer of 2017, I was able purchase bricks from Townsend, MT to build my own kiln. By the fall of that same year, I was able to complete a wood kiln with plans taken from the book “Japanese Wood Fired Ceramics”.

I align my art practice with the Japanese theory of Wabi-Sabi; often described as the aesthetic of impermanence and imperfection found in nature. I work in high-fire stoneware. All my pottery holds water, are food safe, and dishwasher safe.

Giovanni lives in Clyde Park, Montana with his wife Cassi and their two children.
