Kelly Vanderveer is a ceramic artist who turned a love of nature into a hobby that pays for itself. After spending 20 years working as a park ranger in national parks across the West, Kelly now channels her appreciation for the outdoors into quirky wildlife sculptures and nature-themed pottery. Though art is more of a passion project than a career, Kelly’s pottery sales help support her “art habit”, as she calls it, funding everything from clay and glazes to new tools for her studio. Kelly recently opened her studio to the Salmon, Idaho community by offering sculpture and Raku firing classes. For Kelly, making art isn’t about making a profit but funding a passion.
