Elk River Clay is a pottery studio crafting functional stoneware in south-central Montana. Artist Clare Jurczak makes pots in her studio, which sits atop a hill on her homestead facing a vast expanse of prairie and sandstone cliffs along the Yellowstone river. Clare's work is aimed to evoke a connection to the complex ecology of the Great Plains and to the humble tasks of harvesting, growing, and cooking food. Clare creates her work on the potter wheel and then decorates her pots with either glaze or colored slips over stencil images. Clare's forms serve a purpose, from everyday coffee mugs and bowls to unique fermentation crocks and plant propagation sprouters.
