I come from many generations of seamstresses, dating back to the 1890’s when my great-great grandmother was a tailor (technically, a “tailoress” because it was still a man’s world). My mother made my homecoming gowns and M.C. Hammer pants (don’t judge me; it was the 80’s). She was convinced that the sewing gene had somehow missed me—no interest, no skills. She was totally surprised when I asked for a sewing machine for Christmas about 15 years ago. Since then, I have only looked forward. Today, instead of apparel fabrics, I arm myself with wool, faux leather, leather, and cottons to create fun and functional, one-of-a- kind purses, project bags, backpacks and wallets. The result is a variety of bags for every occasion. I'm especially drawn to bright colored bags that can be worn a variety of ways and can be converted from one form to another.
